Rams Review contributor Andy Buckley-Taylor gives his thoughts on the his family dynamics and history leading into Derby's match against Lincoln.
Some might know that my brother Steve is a Lincoln City season ticket holder, so imagine the banter within the family on Tuesday night! Happily my lads are all Derby supporters, but Steve’s partner Sarah was there to add to the Red and White side of the family.
My brothers first ever match was actually during the 1984/85 season at The Baseball Ground where The Rams won thanks to goals for Kenny Burns (yes, Burns himself) and Kevin Taylor.
We had a squad that had been assembled by Arthur Cox without much in the way of funds. Eric Steele, Rob Hindmarch, John Robertson and Steve Biggins were other players.
We won that day 2-0 and apart from a League Cup defeat during the George Burley era, Lincoln had a poor record against Derby. Indeed the following season we thumped them 7-0. Lincoln players that day had a cameo in the TV series Murphy’s Mob.
Fast Forward to the September 13 2022, neither Steve or I were overconfident. Lincoln had failed to win at home and we had even filed to find the net in our away games.
A crowd of about 9,500 was present and their was a good atmosphere. This is a high crowd for The Imps or Wimps as I often joke to my brother.
Apart from the first ten minutes where they hardly touched the ball, they were the better side! Yes it was penalty! Derby simply had the same problem that they’ve been having all season and that’s wasting too many chances.
It was Lincoln’s night and they deserved the win, but wait until the 14th February where we will be waiting to perform a St Valentines Day massacre!
