Will Osula: The Low Down

Updated: Sep 7, 2022

Derby County made he move on Deadline Day to bring in young forward WIll Osula from Sheffield United. We spoke with Hal from Sheff Utd Way to find out what the young man can bring to The Rams.

Derby County have just signed Will Osula. What do you make of the move?

Great move for Osula, he’ll hopefully get the necessary game time needed to help advance his already impressive development.

He's played 5 times for the The Blades last season. How would you sum up his time so far?

Osula looked composed for such a young age in his 5 appearances for United last season, he also worked hard and always put a shift in, fans love to see that spirit, attitude and desire. From what I’ve seen in the youth team matches he’s got a powerful shot on him too and knows where the goal is.

Is he highly rated at Sheffield United? Do they see him as a future first team player?

He’s highly rated at Sheffield United. Paul Heckingbottom clearly likes him, trusts him and sees a promising future ahead for the young Dane.

He’s a striker. What type of striker is he? Is he a hold up player? Does he run into the channels?

He’s a striker I know that! But honestly we haven’t seen enough of him to be too sure of his attributes and playing style.

Can he play multiple positions?

I’m not aware that he’s ever played anywhere other than striker, he might work off a striker in more of a support role but with the players Derby County already have I’d suggest that’s unnecessary.

Is he someone who relies on service for goals or can he create chances on his own?

I’ve seen him create chances on his own in clips from the youth side, looks to be full of self belief, strong for his age and surprisingly agile. Hopefully he continues to develop as this will only benefit Derby and United.

What are his strengths? His weaknesses?

When I was watching him in preseason I was impressed with his dribbling, his technique and natural fitness. He seems to have good awareness of where his strike partner is on the pitch and as a result, excellent vision. He’s got a bit of pace too! When it comes to weaknesses it’s probably unfair to comment at this stage as we’ve only seen fits and starts. I’d like to see more aerially.

Do you think Osula can be good player in League One for Derby?

Osula can definitely be a good player in League One for Derby County, he’ll need the fans to be patient, he’s still a young man, very raw but he has the ingredients there to achieve his ambitions. I’m encouraged by the glimpses I’ve seen, I’d like to have seen more but his potential is high, his determination is evident to see from even the briefest of cameos and I wish him well.
