Tick Tock

Rams Review blogger Elliott gives his thoughts as the start Championship season approaches.

There is less than a week to go until the new Championship campaign kicks off for Derby County. Teams everywhere have strengthened for the new season and yet Derby find themselves in a perilous position without a ball even being kicked.

The Rams only have a handful of players at their disposal with heavy restrictions put on them by the football league, meaning at present they cannot even sign a free agent. Despite outrage at the EFL for their constant targeting of Derby, the club has to look at itself and realise the reason for the restrictions are because of its failures. The submission of the clubs accounts and paying the HMRC bill would in theory lift all restrictions and The Rams could then be active in the market.

Whether or not a takeover is on the horizon is anyone’s guess. Rumours of one have been in the background for months now but nothing has come to fruition. If there had been interest from parties willing to takeover then you would think it would have happened prior to a new season. Rumours on Twitter about Americans taking over is hardly hard evidence at this point that a new owner is likely and with the club barely communicating, fans are again left to ponder what does the future hold.

Derby currently have nine free agents training with them which would bolster their squad massively and add much needed experience. It must be equally frustrating for those players knowing they may never actually get signed by the club. This could ultimately lead to other clubs circling like vultures and offer the free agents instant contracts, which they may take up and who could blame them.

One week to go until Derby’s first league game and as things stand they are nailed on for relegation. So much so that bookmakers are not even offering odds for them to go down. It is almost a guarantee until they get out of this mire they have been stuck in for so long. Something has to change and fast.
