Preview: Derby County v Charlton

Derby will host Charlton on Tuesday looking to bounce back after a disappointing 2-1 defeat away at Barnsley on Saturday.

After going in front away at Oakwell through a terrific Sonny Bradley header, his first for the club, the Rams were eventually beaten from two goals from Barnsley’s Adam Philips, the first being a wonder strike from the edge of the area.

How can we expect Derby to line up on Tuesday ?

It's expected that Paul Warne will stick with three at the back with Eiran Cashin, Sonny Bradley and Curtis Nelson as the centre-halfs with Callum Elder and either Kane Wilson or Ryan Nyambe as the wing backs. Dwight Gayle is in the frame to start. His presence will allow The Rams to have a recognised striker and focal point in attack on the pitch. Since James Collins’ knee injury away at Exeter, The Rams seem to have missed a focal point in attack, which Gayle could provide. This could see either Louie Sibley or captain Conor Hourihane return to the bench as neither had a brilliant game away at Barnsley however, it seems more likely that Sibley is the one dropped.

Opposition Analysis

Despite not winning in their past 18 matches, Charlton have managed to hold Derby’s promotion rivals in Bolton and Portsmouth to draws, in recent weeks.

The Addicks have shown improvement under new manager Nathan Jones, but they still look a poor side who will likely try to limit Derby’s chances while still playing good football at Pride Park.

Alfie May will pose the biggest risk to Derby’s defence with his notorious goal scoring record in League One, he has already scored 16 this season.

What happened last time?

These two teams last played in February 2024. The Rams won 1-0 at the Valley thanks to Nathaniel Mendez-Laing goal. The Rams finished the match with only 39% of possession.

Closing Thoughts:

Derby should have enough to beat this Charlton side, however based on Saturday’s performance The Rams may struggle to create and convert chances, but if key players like Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Max Bird step up then Derby should be able to walk away with all three points.
