King Kazim!

Guest blogger Elliott gives his take on one of Derby's most important players, Colin Kazim-Richards.

Colin Kazim-Richards was signed by Derby County as a free agent following the departure of fan favorite Chris Martin in the summer. Fans believed the club needed a proven Championship goal scorer to replace Martin. One that offered a physical presence and could hold the ball up well. Needless to say, Rams supporters at first we’re hesitant as to whether their new signing ticked these boxes. Kazim-Richards was signed under Phillip Cocu’s tenure but the Dutchman appeared reluctant to play the Turkish international and utilized Martyn Waghorn up front on many occasions. Had Cocu have opted to play Kazim-Richards, would Derby have started to pick up points sooner and potentially saved his job? No one will know, as he was mostly sitting on the bench instead of playing.

Wayne Rooney then took charge of The Rams and decided to let unleash Colin and let him lead the Derby attack. Since starting for Derby, Kazim-Richards has been nothing short of revelation. He has five goals to his name. That's not even the most impressive part. He came into the team and immediately showed passion and a desire to win. This is what fans were craving to see from their team, a player that cares about winning and leaves everything on the pitch. You could be given into believing that Colin Kazim-Richards is 24 years old as opposed to 34 years old, the way that he plays back-to-back 90 minutes twice a week, fighting for every ball.

Kazim-Richards contract expires in the summer and it would be a massive shame if fans never got the chance to chant his name from the stands and witness him playing live. Fans will always back players that show commitment and work hard for the team and it would be a shame for Colin to leave the club and not get the recognition he deserves in person.

Here’s to you Colin Kazim-Richards, a true warrior and Derby County are lucky to have you. Your hard work will beat talent every time (but you've got plenty of both!).
