Derby County finally released their retained list for next season. It put's The Rams personnel predicament in a harsh new light. Season ticket holder and new Rams Review contributor Dan Muir shares his thoughts.
Derby County have today confirmed their retained list for the 2021/22 season. It confirms that 14 senior players will remain under contract through the season, whilst Andre Wisdom, Martyn Waghorn, Jack Marriott, Curtis Davies, Henrich Ravas remain in talks over new deals.
The club have confirmed that Emmanuel Idem, Scott Carson, Scott Malone, Jonathan Mitchell, Florian Jozefzoon will all leave the club this summer.
The list provides much to contemplate.
Firstly, there is an additional note against Marriott’s name, stating that the club had previously intended to to extend his deal until the summer of 2022, but due to the EFL withdrawing his registration (for what is rumored to be embargo breaches), his deal will now end this summer unless a new agreement is reached. Regardless of whether you think Marriott should remain at Derby, it’s a situation that is reflective of the bigger picture at Derby.
There are no huge surprises on the players definitely leaving. It would be remiss to not shout out Scott Carson, who will be fondly remembered at Derby, winning player of the year for the 16/17 season. He’s well thought of at Manchester City and it would be unsurprising to see him sign a deal there.
Turning attention to the players currently in negotiations with Derby, will we see any of them in Rams shirts again? I hope so. Andre Wisdom and Martyn Waghorn were regulars on a match day last season, and whilst not pulling up trees would provide additional numbers that Derby desperately need at the minute. Curtis Davies would provide seniority in the dressing room in a season which will undoubtedly feature youth again. The question is, why would they sign?
Speculation is rife at the minute regarding finances, take overs and EFL penalties. It would be fair to say that Derby will be offering reduced terms to those players, whilst trying to convince them Derby County is a project worth staying for. Simply put, Wisdom and Waghorn at least would likely be able to earn more elsewhere at clubs with more appealing seasons ahead of them.
Reflecting on the squad heading into the new season, Derby are in dire need of players; 14 is a frightening number even with time before the season commences. Agreeing terms to keep players on, would be a step in the right direction.
