Derby County’s Transfer Business

Derby County supporter Emerson Harris gives his thoughts on The Rams transfer business so far, what needs to be done next.

I think we should be very pleased with the business that we have managed to do so far. The intent that Liam Rosenior has shown in bringing payers through the door has been excellent because if we want to be successful in League One this season then we need to get as many players in as quickly as possible. In addition to this, not only has he tried to bring lots of new faces through the door, but he’s also managed to extend the stays of players who already know the club well like Richard Stearman, Curtis Davies, Liam Thompson and Eiran Cashin.

Yes, we do need more players if we want to push for promotion next season because a good squad needs depth and as all Rams fans know, we don’t have that yet; overall the business we have done so far is a step in the right direction and that should be something that all of us Derby fans should be happy about. There will be some fans who are critical of what we’ve done since the takeover, but we must be realistic in terms of that the rebuild will take years, success make take time, but the main thing is we are now moving forward.

With Regards to the names that stand out for me when it comes to the players we’ve signed, it would be easy for me to say the likes of Conor Hourihane, James Chester, and David McGoldrick but they are always going to stand out because they all have Premier League pedigree. In my opinion, the names that stand out for me are Joe Wildsmith, Kwaku Oduroh and James Collins.

Joe Wildsmith has bags of experience in League One and has proven he has what it takes to be a successful goalkeeper in pre-season. His experience is a big factor for me because hardly any of our squad would have experienced League One football so to have someone who has experienced it at a big club like Sheffield Wednesday could be pivotal in helping the rest of the squad and coaching staff understand what to expect from the teams this season.

Kwaku Oduroh is a talented young player that has a bright future ahead of him and coming to a League One club will allow him to develop as player but also play lots of first team football which is something he didn’t really experience at Manchester City. Antoher thing this signing shows me is that the club isn’t only planning for the short-term but that they are also willing to sign (and hopefully give game time) to prospects like Oduroh.

Derby haven’t had an out and out Number 9 for a couple of years now and for me that’s why we haven’t been successful, so bringing someone in like James Collins is a great addition. You know that you can expect 20+ goals a season and that really helps because it then means that you aren’t relying on goals to come from midfield and even defence.

Overall, we have had a very strong transfer window so far, however, I do believe that we need to strengthen in a couple of positions. Those positions are striker and right back. We only have two senior strikers, both are known for holding the ball up and building up play that way. I think we need a striker that can run in behind defenders to mix up our attacks and we need another right back.
