Derby County have signed striker Conor Washington from Rotherham United. What can the 31 year old bring to The Rams? We spoke with the Rotherham United podcast, New York Talk to find out!
Conor Washington played 35 times last season for Rotherham and scored five goals. How did he perform?
He played ok. He was very much a Paul Warne signing and I don’t think Matt Taylor ever fancied him in the Championship. He came with a bit of a reputation of not being the best finisher but never let us down in that area, apart from one glaring miss, although he didn’t have a lot of service.
How would you sum up his time at the New York Stadium?
A bit of nothing really, he was fine. He never really got fans to excited but could never really fault his effort on the pitch.
Washington was only signed last May. Why did Rotherham decide to move on from him?
Like I mentioned Matt Taylor never seem to like him. For all Washington good points he is limited. His goal scoring record isn’t great and isn’t great at making clever runs. I think League One is probably his level.
He’s a striker. What type of striker is he? Is he a hold up player? Does he run into the channels?
He is very much run the channel type of player. He has no real power or physical presence but he is a non-stop runner. We tried to play him as a lone striker and it was a little bit of a disaster he needs people around him.
What are his strengths? What are his weaknesses?
His strengths are his commitment to the cause when playing. He just goes and goes. He sets the tone in terms of pressing from the front that Warne loved for us.
His weakness is his lack of quality on the ball. Although he has pace he isn’t going to beat a man 1-on-1.
Is he someone who relies on service for goals or can he create chances on his own?
He definitely needs help from what we have seen, but we haven’t seen him play with a striker partner all too much, so it's difficult to say. He certainly isn’t one to create a chance for himself or out of nothing.
Do you think Washington can be good player in League One for Derby?
I think League One is his level. He will score a good amount of the chances he is given. By all accounts he is a good guy to have in the changing room as well. I think he goes with most Millers fans best wishes.
